25 Years
I'm a little upset right now. I just made a cruise of the grandaddy of all sports web sites, ESPN.com, and saw NO reference (NONE) to one of the seminal events in American sports history, and quite possibly the greatest upset in the history of sports.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, today is the 25th anniversary of the United States Hockey Team, a bunch of college kids who were ranked 7th out of 12 when the olympis began, beating the best in the world Russian national team to go on to the gold medal game. Now, I know, I'm a hockey nut, and many of you will write off my disappointment in the lack of covergae on the web today, but we have to look back and remember, historically, what this event did for the people of our country.
The equivalent here to remember, folks, is like having the Division III SUNY Oswego Great Laker baseball team play and beat the Yankees. Like having your High School basketball team beat Duke at Cameron Indoor. Like taking your kid's pee wee football team and having them beat the NY Giants.
We were a country that was down. A country in a deep recession, lines at the gas pumps, hostages in Iran, and a national spirit on the decline. People rallied around this victory - total strangers pulled over on the highway to celebrate together and dance in the rain!
So, today, for just a moment, try and catch the news, and maybe catch a clip of Al Michaels doing the call and watch the miracle unfold.

Thank God for Pitchers and Catchers
No, this is not a baseball post.
As I write this, one of the best sports on the planet is about to close down it's flagship league. That's right folks, the NHL is going down the can.
Now, I know many of you aren't sad about this, and could care less. For me, though, Hockey was not only something I watched and shared with my dad growing up, but it was also a big part of my time at college. I know that it may not translate well to TV, and that there would need to be rule changes to make it more fan friendly - hell, I can name a few changes myself - but that doens't mean we should just kiss it goodbye.
So please, for me, for my die hard hockey fan family, for ESPN's John Buccigross, and for the legions of kids who lace up the skates every weekend - hang your head in a moment of silence today around 11am, because that's when commish Gary Bettman steps up to the podium and kisses it all goodbye.

My Man Tony
Tony Kornheiser had an article the other day in the Washington Post about my Nationals (yes, be afraid, I am embracing them). Tony was alledging that no one in DC could name 10 players on the Nats roster. Not entirely true, of course, since I could name 10 easily (5 in the starting rotation, 2 new free agents, 1 big trade, 3 stars who were there before, plus 2 other outfielders that were trade fodder - 13?) but whatever. Dudes on the street won't know of course, but that's not my point.
It doesn't matter if we know their names yet. We're going to love them anyways.
Here's a big number - the average attendance at an Expos Game last year (2004) was a little over 9k per game. In 2003 it was almost 13k per game. The Natioanls sold 18k full season ticket plans already, and the partial packages start sales now, plus, single game tickets don't go on sale until March.
Let's reiterate this - The Nationals 2005 attendence will be, at the very least, roughly DOUBLE what they experienced last year, and roughly, at least, 33% higher than 2003.
We'll learn their names, Tony. Check with the random dude on the street in June.

Super Bowl Breakdance
Yes, ladies and gents - that was MC Hammer you saw during those commercials, parachute pants and all!
Anyways, on to the breakdown, and Page 2's Simmons says it best - "I've seen 80 year-old men use a urinal with more urgency" -- ESPN's Bill Simmons, on the Eagles' last 6 minutes (ESPN.com). Seriously... what were they thinking? I bet my man Diamond Don was freakin' out as he watched them mosey up to the line. I mean, I love McNabb ('Cuse baby!) but dude - have you ever heard of a hurry up offense?
Regardless - hats off to the Pats - that performance was stellar, especially after such a medicore first quarter. Deion Branch just cemented himself star status. si.com's Peter King said the kid was a real class act too (King met him on the HBO NFL Set) so let's hope he sets a better example than Randy Moss.
Moving on - here is the paragraph all New England will love... DO YOU NOW UNDERSTAND HOW IT FEELS? The raw, unadulterated knowledge of winning, time and again? This is how it felt to be Yankee fan '96 - '00. A good, solid group of players, a culture that promotes winning, and a defined leader. Folks, Tom Brady is the same ilk as Jeter. I have heard for years now how Nomar had better stats, A-Rod had more power and better range, blah blah blah, and I always countered with Jeter's leadership, and they laughed at me. Well, you know what? Check Tom Brady's stats - there are several QB's better than him the past four years, including Peyton and oh, the guy who lost last night - but Brady has 3 of the last 4 rings.
Welcome, New England. You know have a leader - enjoy it while you can.

Interesting Sports List
Found on ESPN.com's Page2 - The greatest Quarterbacks in NFL History.
The interesting part for me is how the Giants have Phil Simms at #2 (whom a buddy of mine who is a Giants fan called "mediocre" - blasphemy!) and Kerry break your heart Collins at #80 (the bottommost number). Just shows you where the franchise has gone since the glory days of Parcells. For the true geeks out there - Jeff Hostetler was #28.
No fear, though - Eli will save us... if we can get a WR.

Democracy in Action
OK, OK, i know - a liberal democrat is not supposed to feel this way, according to conservative stereotyping. Regardless of that, however, I just want to post how moved I am by the Iraqi's who came out to vote yesterday - they braved far more odds than we ever have to just to get to the polls, and odds are that their turnout will be higher than ours.
This is by no means me condoning our action in Iraq, by the way - I'm still quite conflicted on that, mainly because many of those you yell at me for not condoning our entry into that country are the same who opposed nation building practices while Bill Clinton was president. Didn't Bill present evidence of Iraqi WMD in 98... and didn't congressional Republicans tell him he couldn't go in? Oh yeah - look it up, folks.
Anyways, don't tell me that your full and total assetion that the President was completely right isn't based, somewhat, on your party affiliation - so don't tell me that I "disrepect the troops" or have "no ideas about foreign policy strength" - think about it yourselves, won't you?
The idea that our troops fought and died for in the sand is the same idea that Iraqi's braved terror for - freedom - It's the same idea that you and I have the ability to excercise everyday, so please, please, try and use it - don't just regurgiate the party line - think.
I will if you will.

Nationals Pride
I like what I see lately.
The more and more I am around the DC metro area, the more Nationals Paraphenalia I see.
From what I can tell, this is a good thing - I mean, I was never part of the 33 years without a baseball team - even my hometown had a AA franchise - but I am happy to see that the area has responded so well to the team, despite the week of no baseball thoughts due to the city council.
Personally, I am psyched - I've always wanted to live in a city with a big league franchise, and splitting season tickets with friends will be great. Now, we may not have the greatest team ever, nor may we even make the playoffs, but I believe that playing in front of a packed house of 40k most nights as opposed to 5k poeple in Montreal will give a boost to the team.
In effect, I'm just waiting for the game that comes down to the young relief pitcher facing the big hitter - "Forget the curve, Ricky - give him the Heater!"

Playoffs?!?!?
Now, I don't mean to sound like ex Colts head coach Jim Mora, but I have to say, after watching one day of the NFL divisional round, it was quite the confusing day.
Game one - Pittsburgh/Jets - Blowout, right? No - Dougie Brien shanks two in the final 2 minutes to blow the game for the Jets (a game the Steelers should have won easily) - sure, they were long, but you're the kicker - you have one job, maybe two... hit that kick, Scott Norwood.
Game two - Rams/Falcons - Should be a tight game, right? Wrong. Falcons put up basically 50 on St. Louis, and it was never even close - and this rams team was supposed to have momentum, and the Falcons had "questions". Well, Questions answered.
So, after a resounding WTF shook the NFL intelligentsia last night, we have to figure out what the hell is going to happen today... and I have no clue, because after last night's games, I look like Jim Mora.
On a side note, as much as I like the Don Cheadle NFL commercials, it was... nice to see Rene Russo on there too, I know, she's old enough to be my mother, but whatever - that's one attractive woman.

I've been meaning to write this for a while...
Because I had a unique event happen to me and I wanted to share it with you all. It's quite sad, so bear with me.
Last November I attended a wedding with my girlfriend - two Army captains who met in Baghdad, both Helicopter pilots in the 82nd airborne (Jen flies Kiowa warriors, Justin flew Blackhawks). It was, by far, one of the neatest things I have ever seen, and I felt privileged just to be able to be there. Granted, the only reason I know them is that my girlfriend was Jen's roommate at NMMI - the New Mexico Military Institute, which is a prep school for those wishing to attend a service academy.
Well, last Sunday, January 2, Jen and Justin had gone to see the family of Jen's old troop commander, another female captain who died over Fallujah. On the way back to Fort Bragg, a tractor trailer jumped the median on I-95 and struck their car, injuring Jen and killing Justin on impact.
We found out about this a few days later, and we drove down and attended the funeral service in Fayetteville the eighth, and Justin will be interred at Arlington February 2. I cannot describe in words the range of emotions that I have felt the past few weeks because of this. Despite the generalization that Liberals hate the military (something far from the truth), I have a deep, deep respect for those who serve, knowing some of them myself and once upon a time considering doing the same... you expect those who serve to be injured in training, or in combat, and to even have them die, but you never expect for something like this to happen, and it cuts you to the core.
I could go off on some rant about highway safety, or the unfairness of life, or whatever, but I won't, because that would disrespect Justin's memory. All I ask is that if you know someone who serves, thank them and tell them how grateful you are for them as a person, because you never know, combat or not, if this will be the last time you have a chance to say it.

Merry Christmas
As I am posting rather late, I hope it was a good one for all of you, and I hope my Jewish readers had a happy Chanakuh (i can never spell it right). For me, this has been a holiday season to look back at not only the past year, but the past few years, so to those who have helped me along the way, I thank you, and for those i have hurt, I ask for your forgiveness.

Back Again
Yeah, I know more of you want me to post more often, and I'd love to, but we don't have a lot going on right now - The Yankees big trade hasn't happened yet, The Giants still haven't won since, like October, There is no hockey, and nothing terribly interesting going on in politics. As for the "lighter side of life" - I saw snow last night. Good times.

A date that shall live in infamy...
I normally don't do this, but being a bit of a WWII buff... take a step back today, as you would on September 11th, and be thankful for the sacrifices of the many who got us through WWII, because without them, certainly none of us would be here.
Other news to catch up on since last week...
Giambi took steroids, so did Barry Bonds. I'm not surprised - I didn't even flinch. they went from my size to gargantuan in just a few years - nothing normal. Void his contract, pay him off, I don't care - Giambi's presence on the field, like that of Barry Bonds, detracts from the game of baseball - if I can't get them out entirely, then at least get Giambi off my team.
Yankee notes - good move, dumping Heredia on the Mets for Stanton (a proven Yank) and dumping the useless Kenny Lofton for relief pitching - I know Lofton still has moves, but the man just had no place on our team - good luck, Philly.
Giants notes - CATCH THE DAMN BALL! Yes, I mean you, Amani Toomer, and you, Ike Hilliard, and yes, even you, Jeremy Shockey. The Kid (Eli) is just a rookie - you think he's going to gain any confidence if you keep dropping the damn ball? Play like a team, once in your life, please.
Politics - Good for you, Eliot Spitzer - You've got my vote - now go convince the rest of NY that you can turn your focus to Albany instead of Wall St. I can help you, if you want. Call me.
Also, Kudos to Harry Reid, the new Dem Senate leader - fillibuster whatever you have to until we get intel reform - you ARE on the right side of this one.

Random Wednesday Thoughts
Tom Ridge steps down - does he run for office in the future? Is he the nominee to succeed Bush in 2008? Could he make PA red? Who takes over at DHS? I like Asa Hutchinson (Having met him), but don't rule out good ole George Elmer Pataki.
Which brings me to my next topic - NY... The center of the 2006 political universe? scoff if you must, but I think it's likely, with both a big name Gov. and Senate race. If Pataki goes to DC, who runs for his spot? Name an influential NYS republican - I bet you their name is on the list.
Baseball - Steinbrenner - DON'T DO IT. A 28 yr old Javier Vazquez is better than a 39 yr old Randy Johnson. Always. Get rid of Kevin Brown, keep the young guys - we need them. Not many Young guys left.
I'd Kill for some snow. I'm just in the mood.

It's been two weeks...
But I was on a mini-vacation, plus thanksgiving, so sue me.
and plus, I gotta be honest, there isn't much interesting of note - I stopped watching cable news, because I couldn't stand any more of the Peterson trial.
Had some very interesting post-election discussions with friends - insights on how, even though the republicans I know were glad they won, many were sad that it had to be an issue like gay marriage that did it. They recognize that dividing Americans based on hate of a group is a bad thing - too bad much of the country isn't smart enough to see it as well.

Monday, monday
Ahhhhh..... do you hear it? It's the sound of no Politics. It's great, honestly... I needed a break. Sorry for not providing daily reading material for you all, though.
Anyways, I have lots of thoughts running around my brain, but none of them coherent enough to write about (yet). So, therefore, I will leave you with some thoughts about this map:http://thechrisproject.com/images/map_nowvsthen.jpg

On a lighter note: The North kicked the South's ass... but it could be a lot different today.

NYS Politics
After some time off to play Halo 2 - beating my roommate handily, by the way - I'm back with more political news.
The big races of the next cycle all put the focus on the greatest state in the USA - New York, baby! Between the governor's race and Senate race of '06, we also have the hotly contested NYC mayor's race of '05.
Bloomberg's approval rating is back up to 49% after being as low as 30% several months ago. It's gonna be interesting to see if he makes inroads with the Latino community.
Governor '06 - I've been saying this for some time - Chuck Schumer is going to run, and win. Eliot Spitzer? Chuck gets to appoint his senate successor if he wins - so guess what deal is going to be made. Spitzer would make a good senator.
And finally the biggie - Senate '06 - Welcome back to Hillary-land. Or Hill-a-palooza, according to the NY Post. Many other names have been tossed out, but I think Pataki makes a run at her - the only way he could get close to a 2008 Republican nomination for President. No offense to Pataki friends out there, but he's been propped up by shitty candidates opposing him in his re-election races. Hillary's machine will wipe the floor with him.

Oh, Shut Up!

I gotta say, though, I am quite tired of listening to Democrats whine about losing. You know what? People lose. Teams lose. The good guy, despite the movies, doesn't always win. Baseball teams play 162 games a season, and the good ones only win around 100. That's a 61% victory rate.
You know what these teams do? They go to bed, they get up the next day, and they go back to work. That's what Democrats need to do. Stop whining about losing, go sit in a room, and come up with a plan. It doesn't have to be perfect, or pretty - just has to be something. We lost, but it's neither the end of the world or a tragedy. People voted, and when people vote, shit happens. People in DC need to learn that we aren't gods - we can try and convince people to vote one way, but we cannot win or lose a race based on our skills.
OK, end Rant. Halo 2 will be in my hands in less than 12 hours now. Read the review at www.teamxbox.com - watch the videos, look at the maps, and prepare to be taken down... By me.

I'm back!
Blogger was down yesterday and this morning, so you get a random post now.
See the movie "The Incredibles". Looks awesome, has the new Star Wars Teaser Trailer.
Saw the death of a smart, funny TV show last night - Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn (of SNL fame). The show provided a place for witty, intelligent comics to discuss social/political issues in an open forum. Very funny, very smart... Therefore it was cancelled. At least the final show was good.
Halo 2 will be mine on Monday at Midnight - look for a review here around 3pm on Sunday - www.teamxbox.com
Finally, a big thanks to all of you who have posted responses - good to know I have a few readers and am not typing this just for shits and giggles...
